Unlike her character in Blue Valentine, Michelle Williams’s Margot is one perfectly content wife in Take This Waltz. That until another man comes along and sweeps her off her feet. (literally, at one point he offers her a lift in his suave pedicab).
This brilliant follow-up to Sarah Polley’s directorial debut Away from Her, explores the certainty and illusions surrounding love, long-term relationships and that uneasy feeling that you may be missing out on something else, including a sexier, free-as-a-bird version of yourself. Interesting yet complicated characters in the film (with the help of cinematographer Luc Montpellier) paint a colorful and profound portrait of married life.
The soundtrack is filled with peppy tunes. Although the title song “Take This Waltz“ by Leonard Cohen comes on in a pivotal sequence of the film, it is the use of “Video Killed the Radio Star” that viewers will remember the most.
